in Progress (?)
The first is trying to look as close to the original on a small scale as possible although in fact all the figures have been substituted for the members of the band The Captain Pyrates.
The second is abstracted look at planes in the composition with what I am calling acid-house colours. Now it looks like global warmings, but not in this photo. I do not know why I turn things into abstract shapes (but I have always liked Picasso). Attempting figurative-ness in the first one (still working on) feels worthwhile too. They are both very Kitsch-y. In future will experiment more with materials and methods of application. I seem to have this tendency to rub the paint on in very thin layers and then take bits off again. Perhaps I am trying to be economical with paint. But it might also be fear.

More thinking on Composition
Currently working on series based on the Raft of the Medusa by Gericault. Drawing and painting from digital images of the painting.
Will upload soon.
Compositions that come to an apex continue to be compelling, but our understanding of them must be different than in Gericault's time. When a painting has movement it is the way your eye moves around the canvas, which is very different to understanding the movement that is "held" (or lost?) in a freeze frame of video.
Freezing and frozen. Coldness as stasis. Fluid as movement. The snow at Abashiri. The snow in Chicago. The trip on the ice breaker. The gel of the ice flow. The motion of the sea. The way that the salt stops it from freezing.

Freeze Frames
frozen gestures / jump cuts
painting from video stills: how has the way we take in at the world been affected by recent technology?
how do we experience transitions from analogue to digital realms?
these are things I have been thinking about while making this work...
