More thinking on Composition
Currently working on series based on the Raft of the Medusa by Gericault. Drawing and painting from digital images of the painting.

Compositions that come to an apex continue to be compelling, but our understanding of them must be different than in Gericault's time. When a painting has movement it is the way your eye moves around the canvas, which is very different to understanding the movement that is "held" (or lost?) in a freeze frame of video.
Freezing and frozen. Coldness as stasis. Fluid as movement. The snow at Abashiri. The snow in Chicago. The trip on the ice breaker. The gel of the ice flow. The motion of the sea. The way that the salt stops it from freezing.
